It is one of the cities located in Kongunad. It is the centre for jewellery-making and gem setting. A popular river which is running across the Karur city is River Amaravathy. The city is famous for Weaving. It is the major profession of the people here. There is a famous temple in this city called the Pasupatheeswarar temple. There are also many temples in Karur city like Kalyana Pasupatheeshwara swamy Temple, Vannmalai Murugan Kovil in Namakkal road and Perumal Kovil in Thanthontri Malai. The city is spoken for cultural heritage. The perennial river Kaveri is running across the city. The other rivers flowing through the city are Nanganjiyar and Noyyal. The temperature in Karur is normally high, 37 degree Celsius. The area is full of forest and the land remains uncultivated. The major part of soil here are black soil.
