Karur city is the headquarters of Karur District. Karur is one of the ancient cities in Tamil Nadu. In early days Chola kings, Naiks of Madurai and the British are successively ruled the Karur city. It has been found that various excavations.

The name of Karur has been mentioned in Kandhapuraanam. It is one of the significant cities in Kongunad. The river Amaravathy which runs across Karur is a very popular one. The Pasupatheeswarar temple is well known in this district. The city is known for weaving.

Karur is bounded by Namakkal District in the north, the Dindigul District in the south, the Tiruchirappalli District on the east and Erode District on the west. The district has a very rich and varied cultural heritage. The Kaveri, Amaravati, Nanganjiyar and Noyyal rivers are flows here. Its economy is mainly agriculture
